Nefarious Cellars is owned and operated by Dean and Heather Neff. Dean makes the red wines and Heather the whites. They have planted several parcels and the first vintage was 2004. Current production stands at 2000 cases with most of the wine sold direct, helped by the fact that their new AVA, Lake Chelan, is a huge tourist destination (and the fact that their wines are first class).
The whites wines begin with the 2009 Consequence, a unique multi-reginal blend of 55% Sauvignon Blanc, 40% Aligote, and 5% Viognier fermented and raised in stainless steel. Light straw-colored with an expressive perfume of citrus, mineral, fresh cut grass, herbs, and floral notes, on the palits it is just off-dry with crisp, savory fruit, good balance, and a refreshing finish. It is an excellent value. The 2009 Riesling Stone's Throw Vineyard (an estate-owned property located outside the Lake Chelan AVA) is light straw-colored with an enticing nose of mineral, spring flowers, and a hint of tropical fruits. Crisp, vibrant, well-balanced and just off-dry in a Kabinett stylle, this lengthy effore may well evolve for 2-3 years and drink well through 2017. The 2009 Viognier Defiance Vineyard (a youn vineyard in its 6th leaf) was fermented and raised in stainless steel. It is medium straw-colored with an alluring nose of mineral, pit frits, tangerine zest, and mango. Spicy, vibrant, and appealling, this lengthy wine can be enjoyed now and over the next 3 years. The red wines begin with the 2008 RX-4, a blend of 35% Mourvedre, 30% Syrah, 22% Counoise, and 13% Cinsault aged for 18 months in once-filled French oak. medium purple-colored with an exceptional aromatic array of Asian spices, incense, underbrush, lavender, brier, blueberry, and plum, on the palate it is medium to full-bodied with already complex flavors, a plush texture, and 1-2 years of aging potential. It will offer prime drinking from 2012-2018. The 2008 The Spinner is made up of 50% Merlot, 37% Syrah, and 13% Malbec from 3 AVAs and 3 vineyard sites. It was aged in 25% new French oak for 16 months. Deep crimson-colored, it proffers and intriguing nose of cedar, spice box, herbs, violets, cassis, and black cherry. Firm on the palate with plenty of spicy black fruit, this concentrated, well-balanced wine will continue to unwind for another 1-2 years and drink well through 2020. The 2008 Malbec Upland Vineyard (100%) was aged for 18 months in 25% new French oak. It is a glass-coating opaque purple that delivers an aromatic array of cedar, tobacco, lavender, mineral, and black cherry. Round, ripe, and rich on the palate, it has excellent depth, volume, and purity. Give this lengthy wine 2-3 years to fill out and drink it from 2013 to 2023. The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Riverbend Vineyard (100%) spent 18 months in 100% new French oak. A glass-staining purple color, it delivers a nose of pain grille, pencil lead, spice box, violents, black currant, and blackberry. Structured and youthful on the palate, it will benefit from another 2-3 years of cellaring and offer a drinking window extending from 2013-2023.
